Waste collection vehicle with fuel cell drive

Entsorgungsbetriebe Lübeck, or EBL for short, have ordered their first waste collection vehicle with combined electric / hydrogen drive. As the costs for such a vehicle are significantly higher than those of a conventional waste collection vehicle, EBL applied in advance to NOW GmbH for funding to cover the additional costs. The purchase of the waste collection vehicle is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI). This funding covers 90% of the additional costs compared to the procurement of a conventional waste collection vehicle.

Technical information

Hydrogen production/supply:
There is another project at Entsorgungsbetriebe Lübeck to set up its own hydrogen production and hydrogen filling station. Information on this can be found in the project "HY.HL Green hydrogen from waste for Lübeck's mobility of tomorrow".

H2 use:
Hydrogen is used here to power the funded waste collection vehicle with combined electric/hydrogen drive. This vehicle combines a fully electric chassis with a hydrogen fuel cell to provide the required electrical energy. This makes the new waste collection vehicle significantly quieter than conventional diesel vehicles and at the same time can meet the requirements for range and short refuelling time.

Planned expansion(s):
Depending on the progress of the project and the design of the funding framework, further hydrogen-powered waste collection vehicles are to be procured in the future.
